Whiterun, once again, and once again that feeling of walking to meet his destiny; Einar greeted people on the streets, but did not stop to talk.
Dragonsreach, the Jarl's Palace high above, seemed to beckon, urge him.

The Guards let him in without a fuss; his face is familiar and he was being expected. Einar made his way to Farengar's study, slowing down as he heard voices...
"You see? The terminology is clearly First Era or even earlier." Farengar's voice, sounding excited. "I'm convinced this is a copy of a much older text. Perhaps dating to just after the Dragon War. If so, I could use this to cross-reference the names with other later texts."
"Good." A woman's voice; Einar moved closer and saw the court wizard talking with someone in light armor and a hood obscuring her features. "I'm glad you're making progress. My employers are anxious to have some tangible answers."
"Oh, have no fear. The Jarl himself has finally taken an interest, so I'm now able to devote most of my time to this research."
Interesting... Einar just stood there and listened.
"Time is running, Farengar, don't forget. This isn't some theoretical question. Dragons have come back."
"Yes, yes. Don't worry. Although the chance to see a living dragon up close would be tremendously valuable... Now, let me show you something else I found... very intriguing... I think your employers may be interested as well..."
The woman then glanced at the door. "You have a visitor."
"Hmm? Ah, yes, the Jarl's protege! Back from Bleak Falls Barrow? You didn't die, it seems."
"No, I didn't." Einar stepped forward, taking the Dragonstone from his pack, and offering it. "I think this is what you were looking for?"
"Ah yes, the Dragonstone, very well." Farengar took it with a smile, already examining it with fingers and eyes, and seemingly already pushing the Nord out of his mind. "You can see Jarl Balgruuf for your reward."
He was about to protest, when footsteps were heard from behind. "Farengar!" Irileth, the Jarl's right-hand. "A dragon was sighted nearby!"
"Great Divines, that is wonderful news! Where is it now?" The Court Wizard seemed to forget the Dragonstone for a moment, while his companion just listened.
"Don't be so excited" Irileth snorted. "The beast might be on the way to set the whole city on fire."
"Oh, of course, of course." Farengar seemed almost embarrassed, but still more interested in seeing and studying a Dragon than in the well-being of people.
"You better come along too." Irileth nodded to Einar. "Of us all, you have the most experience dealing with Dragons, the Jarl will want to talk with you."
Experience... oh, right, a few minutes of 'running away very fast'; regardless, the Nord did not argue, and followed the Dunmer to meet the Jarl again.

"Now, take a deep breath, son." Jarl Balgruuf spoke to the guardsman in a firm, even tone. "What was the dragon doing? It's headed this way?"
"No, sir." The young man was rather shaky and winded, but recovering. "Last time I saw it, after the captain told me to sound the alarm, it was just circling above. I was sure it was going to come after me."
"Very well. Go to the barracks, get yourself a drink and rest, you deserve it." After dismissing the man, the Jarl turned to the others. "Irileth."
"I already ordered a group of guards to assemble near the gates. I'm taking them to the Western Watchtower to investigate." Her tone was not one that admitted argument.
"Very well." The Jarl was not happy; turning to Einar, he added. "My friend, you did great service to this city so far, but i have to ask you for more: please, go with the guards, and do what you can to stop this Dragon."
"I will do my best." Einar nodded. "But afterwards, I have questions for you and Farengar."
"I will make sure they are answered." The Jarl nodded back, and Einar departed following Irileth.

"Spread out! Take cover!" The Dragon at least was not subtle; after they arrived at the tower, saw the destruction and the dead, and found the lone survivor stammering about the attack, the beast arrived from the south with thundering roars.
Einar ducked behind a wall, sword at the ready, while the guards scattered and started firing arrows into the air; the projectiles mostly bounced off the Dragon's scales, and the ones that stuck seemed to only make it angry.
The survivor tried to run, and was an easy target for a fiery breath; the Dragon landed as if intending to devour the smoldering corpse, and the Nord saw his chance.
Running out of cover, he charged the dragon's flank, watching more arrows barely scratch the monster, wondering to himself how many blows he could fruitlessly land on the beast's hide before he was killed.
To his surprise, his first blow slashed deeply near the point where the right wing connected to the body, right as the Dragon tried to take off again; the monster roared in pain, and that
that had bothered Einar on the road back from Riverwood woke up again.
Instead of moving away from the Dragon, he stepped closer, under the quasi-limp wing; the Dragon whipped its head around to bite at whoever had wounded it, and found nothing to sink its teeth into. Its surprise was even greater when Einar advanced from under the 'cover' and struck its head, barely missing an eye.
The Dragon's expression of shocked surprise was almost comical, but Einar did not stop to consider it, pressing the advantage and slashing at a leg, further impairing its mobility.
From the other side, Irileth was surprised herself at the Nord not only facing a Dragon up close and personal, but also taking the advantage; regardless, she ordered the guards to charge. Their blades did work well against the skin of the other wing, making the monster roar in pain, losing focus on the real enemy for a moment.
A moment too long, it would be: Einar struck again, this time where scaly neck met reptilian head, and almost loped it straight off; the Dragon roared in agony, trashed, and fell.
While the guards alternately cheered and stared in disbelief, Einar watched the dead beast as if in a trance; to him, that last roar was not just a dying cry from a beast, but clear words echoing of fear and rage.
"Dovahkiin", said the man, moving closer to the dead dragon, feeling that thundering, rushing
growing again. First on the wounds, then on the seams between scales, the Dragon started smoldering, and the guards jumped back.
, thought Einar, standing over the slain beast, feeling the intangible wind grow, become visible, as the massive body smoldered, burned like paper, scales falling to the ground, flesh turning to ash and smoke, only bones resisting the mystical flame.
"Dragonborn!" stammered one of the guards, watching ribbons of energy wrap around the Nord and be absorbed into his skin.

It was night, when Einar made his way back from Dragonsreach, concepts and ideas and questions buzzing in his mind.
First, it seemed that he was Dragonborn... a natural user of the Voice, able to Shout like the Dragons did... one of the legendary heroes of the past, reborn.
Blood of Talos, indeed.
On the way from the Tower to Whiterun, he heard what for many was thunder echoing on the slopes of the Throat of the World, but for him, the word was clear; it was the same the Dragon had cried out before death.
The Jarl had more to add, having heard and understood the word as well: as a user of the Voice, he was being called by the Greybeards of High Hrothgar, to learn from them. Farengar added more information, about Dragon Wars, Dragon Language, and the return of Dragons, insinuating he would play a vital role in the coming days.
It was... too much to think about right now, even ignoring how he was declared Thane of Whiterun, given a war axe as badge of office, and granted his own Housecarl; stunned from all the developments and revelations, he told Lydia to seek him out in the morning, and made his way into the city proper.
Einar really needed a drink right now.
